Things to Do at Puntzi Lake

Chilcotin Region Activities

From great fishing to incredible nature watching

The Chilcotin (tʃɪlˈkoʊtɪn) region of British Columbia is usually just referred to as "the Chilcotin". A plateau and mountain region sheltered by the British Columbia Coast Mountains on the west side of the Fraser River, the Chilcotin region is part of the Cariboo Regional District which is a municipal-level body governing some aspects of infrastructure and land-used planning. The area was settled by First Nation people and is still home to members of the Tsilhqot'in and Dakelh peoples, as well as mainly farmers and cattle ranchers.

Fishing

Fishing on Puntzi Lake is a favourite pastime around here, especially for Rainbow Trout and Kokanee. Whether you prefer spinning, trolling, or fly fishing, there’s something for everyone—try a small gang troll with worms, a Dick Nite spoon, or a flasher setup. The east side of the lake is deeper, so a downrigger can come in handy, and the weedy spots are great for fly fishing, especially in early spring and fall. And don’t miss our annual Fishing Derby every July—it’s a fun, friendly competition the whole family can enjoy

Wild Horses

The Chilcotin is home to a remarkable population of wild horses, often spotted roaming freely across the open landscape. While their exact origins are debated, many believe they’re descendants of horses brought in during the Gold Rush era. Despite efforts over the years to manage their numbers, these wild horses continue to thrive—adding a sense of untamed beauty to the region and delighting visitors lucky enough to see them.

Boat and Canoe Rentals

There’s no better way to experience Puntzi Lake than by getting out on the water—and at Woodlands Fishin’ Resort, we make it easy for the whole family to join in. Rent a motorboat starting at $110 for a day or explore at a slower pace with a canoe or kayak starting at just $40 per day. Whether you’re fishing, paddling, or simply taking in the view, it’s the perfect way to make lasting memories on the lake.

Walking and Hiking

Whether you’re in the mood for a gentle stroll or a more adventurous hike, there are many peaceful trails around Woodlands Fishin’ Resort that offer the perfect escape. Stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh air, and take in the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you every step of the way.

Birdwatching and Wildlife Viewing

Keep your binoculars handy—Puntzi Lake is a hotspot for birdwatchers and wildlife lovers alike. The white pelican, an endangered species, breeds on Stum Lake on the Chilcotin Plateau, returning each year after wintering in southwest California and off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Along with pelicans, majestic eagles soar overhead, loons call across the water, and bears often visit our little piece of paradise—making every visit full of incredible wildlife moments.

Firepit & S’mores by the Lake

After a day of exploring, gather around the crackling firepit by the lake for a cozy evening. Share stories, enjoy the warmth, and indulge in classic gooey s’mores while gazing up at the starry Chilcotin sky—there’s no better way to end the day. Kids can also enjoy the playground area to release that extra energy!

Summer Rodeos & Stampedes

The Cariboo Chilcotin region comes alive in the summer with a vibrant rodeo circuit that celebrates the area’s deep ranching roots and western heritage. From the action-packed Redstone Rodeo—just a short drive from Woodlands Fishin’ Resort—to other community events like the Anahim Lake Stampede and the legendary Williams Lake Stampede, each rodeo offers thrilling events, local culture, and a warm welcome. Whether you're cheering on the bronc riders or two-stepping at a rodeo dance, these events are a unique way to experience the spirit of the Chilcotin.
